Disebutkan dalam hadits bahwa renungan sesaat lebih baik dari pada ibadah setahun, dengan catatan yang direnungkan tersebut berbentuk hal-hal yang positif yang akan membuat kita semakin cinta kepada Allah swt dan juga kepada Rasulnya.
Anjuran bagi kita untuk berfikir merenung memeriksa dan mengambil pelajaran dapat diketahui dengan ayat-ayat dan kabar-kabar karena ia adalah kunci pembuka cahaya-cahaya dan awal datangnya pertolongan, serta menjadi penjaring ilmu.
Adapun keutamaannya sebagaimana firman Allah dalam Al-Qur’an yang berbentuk pujian, (Dan mereka memikirkan tentang penciptaan langit dan bumi) QS, Ali Imron(191)
Tetapi bukan berarti semua hal itu bisa dibedah dengan akal ada saatnya akal di kesampingkan dan hati dikedepankan seperti misalnya tentang dzatnya Allah, bagi kita wajib iman kepada Allah tetapi kita dilarang memikirkan tentang dzatnya Allah.
Ibnu Abbas pernah berkata kepada satu kelompok, “janganlah diantara kalian sampai-sampai ada yang memikirkan dzatnya Allah”.
Syeikh Tohir bin Saleh al-Jazairi dalam kitabnya al-Kalamiyah mengatakan bahwa dzatnya Allah sama halnya dengan Ruh kita hanya bisa menghukumi dengan adanya walaupun kita tidak bisa melihatnya.
Ulama yang lain mengatakan bahwa memikirkan dzatnya Allah, tidak diperbolehkan bahkan Su’ul adab, karena bisa menimbulkan hal-hal yang negatif, larangan ulam untuk memikirkan dzat Allah tentu berangkat dari hadits yang diantaranya; “Pikirkanlah tentang makhluk Allah jangan memikirkan tentang Allah karena kalian tidak akan dapat menghargai Allah dengan penghargaan semestinya, merenungkan dzat Allah tiada jalan kepadanya kecuali dengan fikir semata-mata merenungkan sifat-sifat Allah kerajaan dan penciptaanya semakin lama semakin bertambah cinta, dan renungannya mengenai segala yang didapatkan baginya, karena keadaannya akan terungkap dengan itu hal itu seperti merenungkan makna-makna langit, bumi, dan bintang-bintang dan segala sesuatu selain Allah swt, karena Allah yang menciptakannya”.
